My kitten, Miso, is about five months old and roughly the size of an overstuffed burrito. She is also, apparently, on a personal mission to destroy every piece of upholstered furniture I own. My couch has this one corner that has been absolutely shredded — you can see the foam peeking out like it’s embarrassed. So a few weeks ago I finally admitted defeat and started shopping for a scratching post.

Here’s my thing: I am not spending $60 on a cat tree before I even know if my cat will use it. I’ve been burned before. I bought a fancy $45 cardboard lounger when I first got her and she looked at it like I’d insulted her ancestors. So when I found the MECOOL 22-inch sisal post for $17.97, I figured that was about the right amount of money to gamble on a cat’s unpredictable personality.

What Showed Up

The box was smaller than I expected, which in hindsight should have told me something. Assembly took maybe ten minutes — it’s essentially a base, a post, and a top platform, with the sisal already wrapped around the main column. The instructions were the usual translated-from-somewhere situation, but honestly, it’s a scratching post. I’ve assembled IKEA furniture with more ambiguity and less success.

Total height is 22 inches. That matters. Keep reading.

The beige color is… fine. It’s beige. It matches nothing in my apartment, but it also doesn’t scream “cat furniture,” which I appreciate. It looks like a neutral piece of nothing sitting in the corner, and I mean that as a compliment.

The First Week

Miso ignored it for two days. Classic. I was already mentally composing my “I wasted $18” speech when I caught her scratching the couch again, picked her up mid-claw, and plopped her directly in front of the post. She scratched it. Then she did that little satisfied tail flick cats do when they’ve just done something mildly satisfying.

Since then? She uses it daily. Not exclusively — she’s a cat, she contains multitudes and also a deep commitment to ruining my couch — but the post has genuinely become her go-to spot for a good scratch. The damage to my couch has slowed down noticeably. Not stopped. Slowed. I’ll take it.

The hanging ball was a hit for about a week, and now she mostly ignores it. Which is fine, because I was sort of worried she’d rip it off and eat the string. She didn’t, but if your cat is a string-eater, keep an eye on that thing.

The 22-Inch Problem

Here’s my main gripe, and it’s the reason I can’t give this a full five stars.

Twenty-two inches is short. Like, shorter than you think. Miso is a kitten and she’s already almost too big for the top platform. She can sit on it, but she looks like a person trying to sit on a barstool that’s clearly meant for someone else. When she stretches up to scratch the full height of the post, her body is basically fully vertical and her front paws are near the top. In a couple more months, I suspect she’ll be scratching the floor next to it out of spite.

If you have a full-grown cat — even a smaller one — this is probably not the post for you. The listing says “for kittens or smaller cats,” and they’re being honest about that, but I still underestimated what “kitten” meant in practice. This is a kitten-to-young-cat product. A six- or seven-pound adult cat might manage. A twelve-pound cat will treat this as a chew toy.

The Construction Verdict

For $18, the build quality is honestly better than I expected. The base is sturdy — not tippy, even when Miso launches herself at it, which she does with an unhinged amount of enthusiasm. The sisal wrapping has held up over a few weeks of aggressive daily use. No unraveling, no shedding fibers everywhere. I’ve seen posts at this price point where the sisal is basically decorative and the cat shreds it down to the cardboard in a month. This isn’t that.

That said, let’s be realistic about what this is. It’s particle board and rope. It’s not a piece of furniture you’ll pass down to your grandchildren. I’d guess I’ll get a year out of it, maybe eighteen months, before the sisal wears through somewhere critical. At $18, that’s roughly a dollar a month, which is honestly cheaper than most things I buy for this cat.

Was It Worth It?

Yes, but conditionally. And I want to be honest about the condition.

If you have a kitten, this is a great starter post. It’s cheap enough that it’s not a real financial decision, it’s small enough to fit in an apartment corner, and it does the job. It redirected some (not all) of my cat’s scratching instincts, and that alone has saved me more than $18 in couch repairs, probably.

If you have an adult cat, skip it. Save up for something taller. You’ll want at least 30 inches, probably more, and you’ll want a post that doesn’t start wobbling the day your cat decides to climb it like it’s a tree.

Also worth mentioning: there’s no top perch that’s actually comfortable for a cat that isn’t a very small kitten. Miso sits on it, but she doesn’t lounge on it. If you’re looking for a napping spot, this isn’t it.

I’ve considered upgrading to a taller post eventually, and when I do, I’ll probably keep this one in the rotation too, since Miso does use it. For now, it’s doing its one job, and it’s doing it for less than the cost of two takeout lunches. That’s a pretty easy trade to justify when you’re on a fairly tight budget like I am.

My honest takeaway: If you’ve got a small kitten and $18, this is a low-risk buy that might save your furniture. Just go into it knowing it’s a temporary solution, because your cat will outgrow it before the sisal wears out. And if your cat is already full-grown? Keep scrolling and save your money for something taller.
