I bought three dog sweaters for the price of one coffee-shop lunch, and honestly? No regrets.

Small Dog Sweaters 3-Pack - Winter Clothes for Small Dogs Girl & Boy, Warm Sweatshirt Outfit for Dogs & Cats, Pullover Dog Sweater, Cute Pet Apparel (Pink-Purple-Rose, Small)

It’s 6:15 in the morning, it’s 28 degrees, and my dog Pickle is standing in the middle of the yard balancing on three legs like the fourth one might freeze off if he puts it down. He’s a nine-pound chihuahua-dachshund mix, which means he has roughly the body fat of a pencil and the cold tolerance of a tropical houseplant. Every winter we do this dance — he shivers, I feel guilty, he refuses to poop, I stand there in my pajamas losing feeling in my ears.

Last year I caved and bought him one of those fancy knit sweaters from a boutique pet store. Twenty-eight dollars. One sweater. It was beautiful, I’m not going to lie, but it also got snagged on a bush in week two and developed a hole, and I spent the rest of the winter mentally doing the math on how much I’d paid per wear. (It was like $4 a wear, which isn’t awful, but it also felt insane for something a dog wears to go pee.)

So this year I went the other direction. I found this 3-pack for $13.99 — that’s about $4.66 per sweater — and I figured, worst case, I’m out the cost of two lattes. Best case, Pickle has a little winter wardrobe and I stop washing the same one sweater every three days.

The sizing thing is real, so measure before you order

I want to lead with this because it’s the part I almost got wrong. I’ve bought cheap dog clothes before and the sizes are basically vibes-based. A “Small” from one brand fits like a “Medium” from another and a “Large” from a third, and none of them match what you’d guess from your dog’s weight.

Pickle is nine pounds, which sounds like it should be a straightforward Small. But I dug through the reviews (there were only 14 at the time, which I noticed — small sample size, so I was a little cautious), and a couple people mentioned the neck opening being tight. So instead of guessing, I actually got out a fabric tape measure and measured his chest girth right behind his front legs — 14 inches — and measured around his neck too. The Small fit that 14-inch chest almost perfectly, with a little stretch to spare.

The neck hole, though. That part was snug. It’s a pullover, so it goes over the head, and Pickle is not a dog who enjoys having things put over his head. The first few times were a two-person operation. Now he’s used to it and mostly just sighs at me dramatically, but if you have a dog with a big head relative to their body, or a dog who genuinely panics about head-holes, this style might be a fight. There are no snaps or velcro here — it’s a straight pullover tube with a neck hole — so there’s no workaround for that.

What the three sweaters are actually like

They arrived in pink, purple, and rose. Which — okay, I have to mention this — is three shades of pink. The listing title says “Girl & Boy” and then the colorway is pink, purple, and rose. If you’re buying for a boy dog expecting a blue or a green in the pack, you’re not getting one. Pickle does not care about gender norms and neither do I, but it’s worth knowing before you click buy, because the photos do make them look a little more distinct than they are. In person, the pink and the rose are pretty close.

Material-wise, “sweater” is generous. These are more like a fleece-lined sweatshirt. Thin, soft, a little stretchy. Not a chunky knit. I’d say they’re good from about 30 to 50 degrees, maybe down to the high 20s if your dog is moving around. If it’s below 20 and you’ve got a short-haired tiny dog, this is not the layer that’s going to save you — you’d want something thicker, or a coat with actual insulation.

They have a decent amount of stretch, which matters more than I expected. Pickle can move normally in them — he can do his weird little scoot-run, he can roll around, he can sit. Some sweaters turn small dogs into statues. These don’t.

The honest downsides

I’ll be straight with you, since there’s no point pretending:

The stitching isn’t amazing. Two months in, one loose thread on the rose one, which I just trimmed with scissors. No unraveling since. The other two are holding up fine. For $4.66 a piece, I’m not expecting couture, and this hasn’t given me a reason to complain.

They pill a little where the harness rubs. Not badly, but it’s there. I wash them cold in a mesh bag and air dry them, and that seems to keep them in decent shape. I would not put these in the dryer. I feel like they’d shrink and I’d be sad.

And the warmth ceiling is real. I mentioned it above but it’s the main thing I’d flag to someone in Minnesota versus someone in Tennessee.

The genuinely nice part: three sweaters changes the whole routine

Here’s what I didn’t fully appreciate until I had them. With one sweater, laundry dictated my life. Dog gets muddy, sweater’s in the wash, dog is cold, I’m hand-washing a sweater at 9pm. With three, one’s on the dog, one’s clean in the drawer, one’s drying. That’s it. The friction is basically gone.

I also gave the purple one to my cat, who is old and thin and gets cold on the windowsill. She tolerated it. She’s a cat, so “tolerated” is the highest praise available.

And honestly, the cheapness is a feature, not a bug. Pickle lost one in the yard for two days. Found it, threw it in the wash, no big deal. If that had been the $28 sweater I’d have been out there with a flashlight at midnight.

Is the $28 boutique sweater a nicer object? Yes. Was it five times nicer? No. Not even close. It was maybe one and a half times nicer, and it had a hole in it by February.

Would I buy these again?

Yeah, I would. I already told my sister to grab a pack for her pom. But I’d tell her the same thing I’d tell you: measure your dog’s chest first, don’t expect real winter gear, and go in knowing the colors are basically three pinks.

If you want one nice sweater that lasts five winters, spend the money elsewhere — that’s a legitimate way to go, and I don’t think you’re wrong for it. But if you just need your little guy to stop doing the frozen three-legged shuffle every morning, and you want enough of a rotation that laundry never becomes an emergency, $13.99 for three is a genuinely good deal. I’ve spent more than that on a single bag of treats Pickle sniffed at and rejected.

Pickle still hates getting dressed. But he goes outside now without the leg thing. That’s worth four bucks and change to me.
