How to Stop Your Cat from Scratching Furniture

Cat scratching is a natural behavior, but it doesnt have to mean destroyed furniture. Understanding why cats scratch is the first step to redirecting this instinct in a way that protects your sofa and keeps your cat happy.

Why Cats Scratch

Cats scratch to mark territory, stretch their muscles, and maintain claw health. Its completely normal and practically impossible to eliminate entirely. The goal is to provide acceptable alternatives.

Provide Better Options

Invest in a sturdy scratching post or cat tree. Place it near the furniture your cat currently targets. Reward use with treats and praise. Some cats prefer sisal, others prefer carpet — experiment to find what your cat likes.

Make Furniture Less Appealing

Use double-sided sticky tape, aluminum foil, or commercial furniture protectors on targeted areas. Cats generally dislike the texture of sticky surfaces. You can also try pet-safe citrus sprays as a deterrent.
